にじむ街の灯を ふたり見ていた〜　上田正樹さんの有名な「悲しい色やね」の最初の歌詞です。今回の染めの味である「にじみ」について考えていたらなぜかこの曲が浮かんできてしまいました。そこでさらにニジムコトバを捜してみたら、無念、涙、汗、血、苦労等等、、なんだか切ない感じの言葉のオンパレード。しかし、涙をにじませ、汗をにじませ、切磋琢磨しながらやがて人柄や風格がにじみ出す、、まるで人生そのものを語るために必要な言葉だなとも思えたのです。技法によるにじみとは全く関係ありませんが、コトバが大事にされなくなった昨今、広告に関わる人間として今回の手ぬぐいに「コトバ」の大切さをにじませてみました。

Watching the city lights becoming blurred beside you…. These are the beginning words of Masaki Ueda’s famous song, “Sorrowful Colors.” This song popped out in my mind for some reason when I was thinking about “bleeding”, which is the taste of this special technique of dying tenugui. Then, I looked for more bleeding or blurring words. Chagrin, tears, sweat, blood, hardships, and so on… a cavalcade of agonizing words. Bleeding tears, bleeding sweat, working hard, and eventually bleeding one’s true character and own style…as if these words are needed to tell one’s life story. It’s nothing to do with this dying technique, but as a person who deals with advertizing, I made the importance of “words” to bleed on the tenugui in this age when words are rarely cherished.
